We often talk about having a spiritual awakening, but what is it exactly? In reality, in practice, how does awakening benefit us?
For my part, I used to have the idea that awakening was something that made you a Guru or someone endowed is special powers, privy to the secrets of life. In short, that it is something special. For some other people, the idea is that they will now see how others tried to control and manipulate them.
But the experience of awakening is like a soft breeze, a gentle whisper. The idea of a separate self, the self that suffers, clings, and grasps for control, begins to dissolve in the ocean of Oneness. And that is it. It is both as difficult and as simple as that.
My guest for this podcast is Lisa Carillo, sharing her own awakening experience and the tools she created to help others on the path.
More than a decade ago, at a silent retreat, Lisa stopped having the thoughts of a separate identity and saw that we are already and always the One Infinite Benevolence. When the thoughts came back a few weeks later, they weren't as convincing.
She developed tools for unraveling these thoughts and the conditioning of fear, using our daily lives as the perfect Divine workshop.
This was a fun podcast to record. In retrospect, I see it was a milepost on my own journey of transformation.
We recorded it just before I embarked on a life-changing Sufi trip through Turkey and Italy. Fear and anxiety came up — I was supposed to leave early next morning — and we talked about it.
Softening through the ego's fear of change, we allowed more of the Infinite to come through.
We also talk about Lisa's books: "An Unprincipled Life: Living From the Unknown" and "Living Awake: 20 Techniques to End 'I Got It; I Lost It.'" Her website is www.experiencingthetrueself.com
